Your Visco Memory Foam Questions Answered

by Christina

If you’ve been shopping for a new pillow, mattress, or mattress pad, you’ve probably heard terms like memory foam, or visco elastic memory foam. It seems almost as though the people who are marketing these products expect us to just know what these terms mean. To start, I can tell you that the two mention above mean the same thing. Visco elastic memory foam is just a longer way of saying memory foam.

What exactly is visco memory foam?

It is a man-made foam that reacts to your body’s weight and temperature, cradling the shape of your body while you rest comfortably on it.  A pretty cool fact about this foam is that it was developed by NASA for air travel saftey.

What does memory foam feel like?

Especially if you like a very plush mattress, you may find memory foam to be a little on the firm side. Usually, people adjust to the firmness rather quickly. As I’ve mentioned, it cradles your body for optimal comfort. The benefit of this cradling action is that your weight is evenly distributed, minimizing any pressure points you may feel on a standard mattress.

Also, because of the open cell construction of the foam, the material is allowed to breathe more than a standard mattress would. This keeps the mattress, and your body, much cooler during the night.

What else can memory foam do for me?

My favorite fact about visco elastic memory foam is that it is very resistant to bacteria, mildew, dust mites, and mold. Sadly, our standard mattresses are magnets for these nasty things. If you have allergies, you will benefit greatly by switching to a memory foam mattress or mattress pad. Personally, I use a Sleep Better 2 inch visco elastic memory foam mattress topper. I find this works wonders for my dust mite allergy, and it is extremely comfortable. The only drawback is that I found out (after I bought it, of course) that the 2-inch pads only last about a year before they start to sag from your body weight. A friend of mine suggested that next time I get the Sleep Better 3 inch visco elastic memory foam mattress topper; well, there’s always next year!

Another reason people like these foam mattresses is that there is less disturbance from a partner’s tossing and turning. By now, we’ve probably all seen the commercial where a woman jumps on her memory foam mattress with a glass of wine only a few feet away. I’ve always been amazed that the wine doesn’t spill. Now, I understand it a little better. When my husband tosses and turns at night, I don’t feel a thing!

I’m hoping my explanations have helped you understand memory foam a bit better. I’ve always felt that they could do a bit of a better job on the marketing for this remarkable product. If more people understand what it is, and how it can benefit them, they would be more likely to get a better quality sleep – and let’s face it, we all want to be around more people who are well-rested and content.

Backrest Pillow: For Extra Support in Bed

by Christina

As a way to relax, I like to read a bit before bed. Though I know I shouldn’t, I often end up sitting in bed reading (if you have trouble sleeping like I do, you should really limit your time in bed to when you are sleeping). The main problem that I have with this, aside from the fact that it might be contributing to my sleep troubles, is that my back always ends up hurting. My husband suggested I get a back rest pillow, so I can sit up properly while I read without damaging my spine. Though I’ve always understood that this was a good idea, I also have always associated those kinds of pillows with my grandfather; it may sound silly, but I thought I was too young to have one of those backrest pillows lying around the house!

As time went on, my back started to hurt more and more, and my pride could no longer get in the way of my comfort. It was time to start shopping for a backrest pillow. The ones that I associate with my grandfather, and older people, are the pillows that have arms. They look like the back to a plush chair. While it is comfortable, a backrest pillow with arms can be bulky. I wasn’t really looking for something to take up a lot of space in the house. So, I knew from the start that this would be a challenge.

A bed backrest pillow was necessary to avoid doing major damage to my back, but the truth is, I really didn’t want one. Have you ever gone shopping for something you need but don’t want? It can be a laborious experience, to say the least. Finally I landed on a memory foam wedge pillow to support my back. It doesn’t have arms; and I have to admit, I might be more comfortable if it did.

What I like about this pillow is that it allows me to lie back in bed while keeping my head elevated just enough to be able to read comfortably – and my back has never felt better! I do understand that some people may be more comfortable in a more upright position while they’re reading. In this case, I would highly recommend the backrest pillow with arms. While doing my shopping, I reluctantly tried out a few of these pillows and they were remarkably comfortable.

Whichever pillow you decide to go with, the important thing is keeping your back safe. Our beds are made for sleeping, not for sitting up, which is why they offer zero support for your back in an upright position. If you need or desire to sit upright in bed, you owe it to your back to get the proper support.

Top 3 Natural Cures for Insomnia

by Christina

You’re lying in bed, tossing and turning for what seems like an eternity. You look at the alarm clock. It’s 3:00 AM. Just three short hours left to get some shut-eye before you have to be up for work.

Insomnia strikes again.

If you’re like me, you end up in these situations occasionally but still refuse to take medication. There are just too many scary side effects, even with the over-the-counter stuff. I don’t suffer from chronic insomnia (thank goodness), but I’ve had enough sleepless nights to have become someone of an expert in natural cures for insomnia. There are a few things that can be done, but you have to start now. Don’t wait until it’s 3:00 AM and you’re already trying to force yourself to sleep.

How to cure insomnia naturally

  • 1. Settle in to a routine. Plan to go to bed at the same time every night (around six to seven hours before you have to be awake is ideal). Spend about an hour or two before bed on relaxation. Do whatever it takes to relax you; read a book, take a bath, watch television. Just don’t do it in bed. You need to train yourself that your bed is for sleep and sleep only.
  • 2. Relax your mind and body. Meditation and massage are two great ways to relax your tense muscles and release the stress from your mind. It becomes much easier to sleep when your worries have been worked away. These are two very simple things that can be done right before bed. You will be surprised at how much of a difference they can make.
  • 3. Herbal remedies. There are quite a few herbal remedies for insomnia. They are safer than their medicinal counterparts, but they are not quite as strong. When you are taking herbs for insomnia, it is recommended that you take them consistently for about two to three weeks in order to see the best results. Some of the more popular and readily available herbs that work against insomnia are chamomile, kava, valerian, lavender, and passion flower. Most are available in tea or tincture form. There are a few that can be found in pill form as well. If you’re looking for a tea to relax your insomnia away, check your local grocery store. You’re sure to find chamomile tea there. Otherwise, head to the local health food store to find specialty teas, tinctures, or pills that will help you get to sleep. Keep in mind, there are still side effects to these herbal remedies, but they occur less frequently and are much less severe than that of insomnia medications.

Personally, I’m glad there are so many ways to cure insomnia naturally (though they usually work best for transient insomnia). If you just work these simple remedies into your nightly routine, you will have many more restful nights – and you won’t have to find yourself counting down the hours until morning.

Difference Between CPAP and BiPAP Machines

by Christina

If you have sleep apnea, chances are you’ve heard of a CPAP machine; or maybe, your doctor may have even recommended that you use one. A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine continuously pushes air into a mask that is fitted around your mouth and nose. This device is used to treat sleep apnea, which is a very serious sleep disorder where the patient will stop breathing for a period of time during the night.

While they are very effective, there are quite a few drawbacks to CPAP machines. They can be bulky, loud, and uncomfortable. In fact, some patients find it difficult to get any sleep at all with a CPAP machine. This alleviates the concern that they will stop breathing during the night, but poses other obvious health risks. Patients who use CPAP machines on a regular basis may also find that they cause nasal congestion, dry mouth, and chapped lips.

In the ‘90’s, an improvement was made to the CPAP technology, and the Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) machine was born. These machines offer many improvements over their predecessor, but are more costly. Because of the increased cost, many people with mild to moderate sleep apnea still opt for the CPAP machine. However, BiPAP machines offer a much needed alternative for patients that suffer from certain other conditions.

What is a BiPAP machine?

BiPAP breathing machines use a more advanced technology that measures the patient’s breathing, resulting in a more controlled and targeted airflow. This reduces the uncomfortable side effects like nasal congestion, and dry mouth and skin.

BiPAP vs. CPAP

Because of the more advanced technology, BiPAP machines are better-suited for people with certain conditions. With a CPAP machine, the patient must be able to exhale more heavily against the constant flow of air. A BiPAP machine accounts for the time needed to exhale, and makes it easier on a person who is suffering from conditions that affect the lungs or that cause overall weakness. Patients suffering from congestive heart failure, neuromuscular disease, lung disorders, or atelectasis will benefit from using a BiPAP machine instead of a CPAP machine.

If you think a BiPAP machine is right for you, the first thing you should do is talk to your doctor. If he or she agrees that it makes more sense than a CPAP machine, you may even be able to have the cost covered by your health insurance. One of the most popular of these machines is the Respironics BiPAP machine. It is made by Phillips and has a good track record for being reliable and offering few side effects.
